June Breakfast Club

Well the fog didn’t dampen spirits on Sunday and yet again an eclectic mix of cars graced the streets of Warragul. We duly ‘rugged up’ against the cold and wandered down a little late; the fog thickening as we drove down the hill into Warragul. I was muttering to Mike that it would be unlikely given the weather that there would be a great turnout, especially on a long weekend. I took the pragmatic approach that we would enjoy the company of a few die-hards and see a few great cars. I ate those words pretty damned fast; yet again the street was full and there were a host of ‘new’ cars to check out.  Another simply fantastic morning with more and more locals turning out to join us.

The “Bayside WRX” was there again and this time with a ‘Bayside friend’ – a Renault Gordini. Dane drove over the back way from Warrandyte in pea-soup fog in his 911SC again and a friend of ours came along with his daughter from Melbourne for a Dad-and-daughter outing in his early 911. Wayne brought his MR2 up from Frankston along with a friend in another MR2.

A new local breakfast clubber brought out his Ferrari, the “Snaike” (Bathurst homolgated XC 351 Cobra) made a return visit plus many others. Great American muscle of all forms again, rare and excellent examples.

My “notables” for the June Breakfast Club…Graham and Marg for braving the elements and bringing the D-Type Jaguar along. Marg had so many layers on it took about 10 minutes for her to rug up again for the drive home. She’s in there, somewhere, under all those layers of clothing, rugs etc. A real enthusiast and car nut – and just like a Girl Guide, well prepared!

The Renault Floride – I had to do a search on the Floride as I know NOTHING about these little cars and was amazed at their history. An excerpt from the Renault official website at: http://www.renault.com/renault_com/en/main/60_PASSION/20_Heritage/20_Les_voitures/index.aspx

“At the end of the 1950s, France was prosperous and enjoying life once more. The Floride, based on the Dauphine cabriolet, embodied this gay, carefree era….
In 1959, elegance was embodied by flowing lines, bright colors, and American cigarettes. Pietro Frua therefore decided to extend the Dauphine at front and rear, to create the Floride.
Particular attention was paid to the bodywork. A Floride badge decorated the front wing. A long side molding emphasized the waist line. “White sidewall” tires, an ultimate touch of sophistication, were available as an option, and the first models could be recognized by the air intakes on the rear wheel arches.
The Floride’s colors were part of its style and extravagance. In shimmering or pastel shades, red, light yellow or pale blue, they expressed summer days and joy of living. It’s no surprise that all the stars of the time wanted to be seen at the wheel of a Floride!”
  How cool is this description!

For the third time running, the mix of vehicles and bikes was different and varied. I find myself counting down the weekends in between Breakfast Clubs in anticipation and with genuine excitement as this event is flushing out so many wonderful cars, bikes and people. Roll on July…rain, hail or shine the Breakfast Club is a must-do for any motoring enthusiast! See you on the second Sunday in July for brekkie!!!
