Well the Phillip Island Historic races have been and gone again. We, the public were treated to another smorgasboard of rare and beautiful cars from a variety of eras. I don’t think anyone would have been dissapointed as the quailty and variety of cars were fantastic. As usual the were dozens of Touring cars. Sports cars both production based and pure racing sports cars, Formula cars of all varieties from Formula Junior to Formula 1. All these were from the years of 1927 to 1989!
We were treated to some great racing by all categories and demonstration laps from a selection of Formula 1 cars including the 1980 Alan Jones Williams 007 Championship winning car, SurteesF1 TS9B, Alboretto’s Ferrari 156/85. Other notable cars were a March 81C, the Lola T700, a Gurney EagleT2G, McLaren M8E Can am car, the Ginetta G10 Sports car.
The highlight of the weekend for me was to see a full field of 32 F5000’s which was even rare to see during thier prime in the 1970’s. The leading bunch of these were being driven and raced hard which was fantastic to see. The highlight of these was James Davison (cousin of Will and Alex) who really works these things as they were meant to be driven (hard and fast). To see them used this way is an absolute joy!
Billy, Jackson and I even had a chance to have a go on the Go Karts on the scale model track of the Grand Prix Circuit, which was fun! All in all it was a great weekend of seeing some fantastic cars, meeting many old friends and new ones.
